It depends on where in the UK you live. In England, dogs must be microchipped and registered by 8 weeks of age, and owned cats by 20 weeks. In Wales and Scotland, microchipping is compulsory for dogs. In Northern Ireland, dogs must be microchipped as part of the dog licensing system. In every nation, the registered details must be kept up to date.
Your pet's 15-digit microchip number (it's on their paperwork, or any vet can scan for it free), your contact details, your pet's description and date of birth, and a payment card for the one-off £20 fee. Registration takes about five minutes.
Yes. Enter the chip number during registration and we'll check where the record is currently held. If it's on another UK database we'll guide you through the proper transfer route rather than creating a duplicate — duplicate records are the enemy of reunification.
It's strong evidence that you are the registered keeper, but not conclusive legal proof of ownership, and we don't adjudicate ownership disputes. What we do provide is a complete, tamper-evident history of the record — exactly what's useful if a dispute ever arises.
Completely free, and always will be. Keeping your details current is a legal requirement across the UK, so we will never put a price on it. Log in, edit your address, done — you'll get a confirmation and the change is recorded in your pet's history.
Start a transfer from your dashboard — it's free for both sides. The new keeper confirms their own name, address and phone number before the transfer completes, and the full keepership history is preserved. An animal that isn't microchipped (or validly exempt) can't lawfully be transferred at all.
Yes. You can add a secondary contact, or a temporary carer with start and end dates — useful for holidays, so a lost pet never rings only a phone that's abroad.
Keep the animal safe (a vet will treat emergencies regardless of ownership), get the chip scanned free at any vet, rescue or dog warden, then search the number at our microchip lookup. If it's a dog, you must also tell the local dog warden — that's a legal requirement, even if you plan to care for the dog yourself. Our step-by-step guide is at /found.
The record is flagged instantly. Any authorised search of the chip triggers an alert to you, finders can reach you through our privacy-protected messaging without either party's details being shared, and for theft you can attach a police crime reference. Marking your pet found closes the alert and keeps the history.

The one-off £20 registration fee is paid by card through our payment processor. We never see or store your full payment card details, the price is always shown before you commit, and VAT is included where applicable. See Pricing & Fees for the full list.
Not for the essentials. The £20 covers the lifetime of your pet's record, and detail updates, keepership transfers and lost-pet alerts are free forever. The only optional paid extra is the Guardian Tag, which launches with our shop.
